Wulkan surface treatments
Whether your surface treatment problem is large or small, we have the solution. The choice of surface treatment for goods and fasteners has a major impact on function, aesthetics and durability. With Wulkan surface treatments, Mattssons has the technical expertise to optimise your product.
At the Wulkan facility in Anderstorp, we perform washing, tumbling, deburring, polishing, waxing, lubrication, and locking of subcontracted products. In addition, we offer our own unique surface treatment MS-420 (C4), which is the result of several years of internal development and combines strong corrosion protection with high assembly efficiency. With our reliable partners, we also offer all possible surface treatments to give you, our customer, major logistical advantages.
Washing (in-house)
We use alkaline washing. The pH value of the washing solution is 9.5-10, and this method minimizes issues with synthetic oils such as high-pressure oils and emulsions. With a capacity of 2.5 tons per hour, throughput time is short and the price per unit is low. We wash all types of bulk goods, from small rivets to products over 500 mm in length.
Tumbling, deburring, polishing (in-house)
These are crucial steps in the process. Our Trowal vibrators ensure consistent and high-quality deburring, with or without chips. The treatment can be performed on both hardened and unhardened materials. This service can be purchased separately or as part of a package with subsequent surface treatment.
Hardening
Electro-galvanizing and chromating
The process is neutral to slightly acidic (pH value of 6.2-6.5). With proper pre-treatment, it reduces the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, a common issue. Controlled chemical dosing and continuous bath filtration ensure uniform layers and the exact desired thickness. Chromating, or passivation, is available in blue (bright), yellow, black, and green. Our specially equipped drums allow us to galvanize certain items that typically require rack galvanizing. Additional corrosion protection with lacquer or oil is also available. We use Corrosil as an extra topcoat for enhanced corrosion resistance.
Nickel plating
Materials such as steel, metals, and die-cast zinc can be coated with nickel. The precision of our facility, with continuous bath filtration, ensures high-quality nickel plating. High ductility (layer toughness) and good distribution are additional advantages of our system. We offer various options, including nickel plating alone or nickel with a copper underlayer. Our specialty is nickel plating of brass and steel components.
Copper plating
This process provides an excellent base for other surface treatments and offers high ductility when combined with nickel. It also provides good corrosion protection and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity.
Sandbond-Z
Sandbond-Z offers significantly better corrosion resistance compared to traditional electro-galvanizing. It is performed in three steps: first, a nickel coating is applied, followed by hardening of the component, and finally, galvanizing. The structure of the process eliminates the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
Zinc and manganese phosphating, oiling
Phosphating is a chemical surface treatment method that provides an excellent base for painting, lacquering, and glide coating. Combined with oiling, it offers good corrosion protection and is particularly suitable for bulk items such as screws and bolts. Zinc phosphating is the most common process, resulting in a gray, uniform surface that provides excellent corrosion protection after painting. Manganese phosphating produces a black-gray layer and serves as an excellent base for lacquering, also offering lubricating properties. We have facilities for both drum and rack goods.
Pickling, bright pickling
We are well-versed in this area. One example of our capabilities is the pickling of steel.
Glide coating (molybdenum, Teflon, wax)
Glide coating is performed using centrifuge and rack methods, resulting in a dry lubricating film with very low friction coefficients. It is highly resistant to heat and cold. We primarily use Gleitmo products, one of the most advanced programs available on the market. For more information:
Mechanical surface treatment
The Rotalyt method is a mechanical surface treatment for iron and steel items that is unique in Sweden. We use zinc, aluminum, tin, and lead for coating, as well as various alloys. The surface layer becomes ductile (tough) with a matte-glossy appearance. A significant advantage of this method is that it largely eliminates the occurrence of hydrogen embrittlement.
MW 4-20 (in-house)
The MW 4-20 surface treatment is a zinc-nickel-based process that provides excellent rust protection, comparable to alternatives like hot-dip galvanizing and stainless materials. MW 4-20 is highly resistant to surface damage and prevents galvanic corrosion when combined with stainless steel and aluminum.
Zinc-Nickel
Offers excellent corrosion protection and prevents galvanic corrosion when used with stainless steel and aluminum. It does not clog threads and key grips and is also insensitive to surface damage.
Thread locking (in-house)
Processes for thread locking on fasteners across most common materials and dimensions.
